Cykler Song
Scholars
The Cykler Song Scholars program was founded by Stephen Rodgers in 2022 to encourage graduate student research on song. Each year, two graduate students from the University of Oregon’s School of Music and Dance—one in performance and one in academic studies—receive a $6,000 stipend to pursue original research that brings overlooked vocal repertories to light.
My goal was to give students the time, the resources, and the mentorship to develop their voices as researchers, and in so doing to shine a light on underexplored song repertoire.

This program would not be possible without the support of University of Oregon Foundation trustee Timothy Foo who, along with the university’s Presidential Fund for Faculty Excellence, provided funds to establish the Edmund A. Cykler Chair in Music.
Thanks also to the Dean of the School of Music and Dance, Sabrina Madison-Cannon, for providing funds to support these students.
THE PURPOSE
Since the program started, students have created world-premiere recordings, presented conference papers and recitals, built digital resources, launched podcasts, commissioned new works, and developed public-facing projects that have introduced neglected songs and song traditions to performers, scholars, and audiences around the world.
